In this hybrid documentary, the Ministry of Not Forgetting – a fictional new government body – investigates how an icon becomes etched in the collective memory. Their first subject: Marianne Faithfull. The officials, played by Tilda Swinton and George MacKay, believe that her image needs to be revised. With 35 albums to her name, this acclaimed singer is, after all, a major cultural icon, yet she is often described solely as Mick Jagger’s muse.
Until shortly before her death in January 2025, Marianne Faithfull worked closely on this film with directors Jane Pollard and Iain Forsyth. This is no run-of-the-mill portrait of a singer-songwriter, but a unique and intimate portrait of an inimitable rebel.
