In the lawless 1970s, Tony Kiritsis (Bill Skarsgård) pursues his American Dream: he buys a piece of land. But when he can no longer pay off the loan, he suspects his mortgage broker, Richard Hall, of shady dealings. And not entirely without reason. On 8 February 1977, Tony walks into Richard’s office with a sawn-off shotgun. He walks out again with Richard at gunpoint and a ‘dead man’s wire’ around his own neck. TV reporters are immediately on the scene and broadcast the hostage situation live.
This crime film, based on a true story, by legendary filmmaker Gus Van Sant (My Own Private Idaho, Elephant) premiered at the Venice Film Festival and has already won awards at the Chicago and Miami film festivals.
