After a ten-year crusade in the Holy Land, marked by hardship and disillusionment, Knight Antonius Block and his faithful squire return to their homeland. In 14th-century Sweden, the plague rages with full force, misery and ignorance reign, and countless alleged witches meet their deaths at the stake. In this desolate and horrific world, the knight comes face to face with Death on a deserted coast, who has come to claim him. To buy time, the condemned man proposes a game of chess with the gaunt figure wielding the scythe. This results in the most famous sequence in Bergman’s oeuvre. This is one of Bergman’s most symbolic films.
