Filmmaker Hannah (Olivia Colman) travels to Amsterdam with her non-binary teenage daughter Frances (Aud Mason-Hyde) to visit her father Jim (John Lithgow), who is affectionately called ‘Jimpa’ by his grandchild. When Frances decides she wants to stay with him for a year, Hannah is forced to re-examine her own ideas about parenthood and responsibility. Meanwhile, Jim enthusiastically encourages Frances to explore Amsterdam’s queer scene. But it gradually becomes clear that the freedom he himself once sought in Amsterdam is not necessarily the same as the freedom his grandchild craves today.

Following Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, Sophie Hyde returns with a warm and personal family drama about three generations who love one another, but do not always understand one another. Hyde draws on her own life for inspiration: her gay, activist father, her non-binary child and her own position between the two generations formed the basis for the film. Starring Olivia Colman and John Lithgow, Jimpa is a loving, funny and at times confrontational film about parenthood, identity and how ideas about freedom change from one generation to the next.
