Klondike
On 17 July 2014, a Malaysia Airlines flight is shot out of the sky east of Ukraine by pro-Russian separatists. None of the 298 occupants survive. Klondike takes off on that particular black day. Irka and Tolik’s farm is close enough to the disaster area to share in the debris. Tolik wants his heavily pregnant wife to leave the war zone as soon as possible, but Irka refuses.
