After the Spanish Civil War, Franco wants to organise a dinner for his closest associates at the legendary Hotel Palace in Madrid. A young lieutenant is tasked with ensuring that everything runs smoothly, assisted by a headstrong maître d’ and a group of Republican chefs who are released from prison especially for the occasion. Together, they prepare a banquet in record time, but other plans are being hatched in the kitchen.
The film is an adaptation of the play La cena de los generales by José Luis Alonso de Santos. Director Manuel Gómez Pereira opts, in his own words, for a pronounced anti-war vision and places the story on a human level, without trivialising the oppression, fear and hunger of the post-war period.
