La residencia (English: The House That Screamed) is set in a 19th-century French boarding school for rebellious girls. The domineering Señora Fourneau rules with an iron fist. Newcomer Thérèse wants to escape her perverse torment as quickly as possible, especially when several girls begin to disappear under unusual circumstances.
As the country’s first major horror production, and moreover the first to be shot in English, acclaimed director Narciso Ibáñez Serrador left his bloody mark on Spanish genre cinema with La residencia. This gothic precursor to Suspiria and slasher films can be seen in its recently restored and uncensored version!
Selected and introduced by the Ghent-based horror and cult collective Kuru.
