Mon Oncle

In this classic film, Monsieur visits his sister and brother-in-law’s ultra-modern villa in the Parisian suburbs. He looks completely out of place in the cold, luxurious surroundings. His nine-year-old nephew Gérard also seems unhappy there. Hulot takes the boy to a cosy old neighbourhood where he can play undisturbed with his friends.

At the end of the film, it is precisely this residential estate that has to make way for a new office complex. In this way, Tati offers a critique of a changing society in which decadence and greed threaten to supplant the human desire for conviviality and helpfulness. *Mon oncle* is a true Tati classic, with its distinctive visual humour, extraordinary futuristic sets and striking sound effects. A well-deserved winner of the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film!
