Following Son of Saul and Sunset, László Nemes returns with Orphan. The Jewish boy grows up in Budapest in 1957, in the shadow of the Hungarian Revolution, alongside his stoic mother Klára. She has raised him with an idealised image of his father Hirsch, and for eleven years he has been waiting for a man he barely knew. Andor’s life is turned upside down by the arrival of Berend Mihály, a rough-mannered man from the countryside. He appears to be linked to Klára’s mysterious past during the Second World War and claims to be his father.
