Chronically lonely American expat William Lee (Daniel Craig) is lost in bustling 1950s Mexico City, always with a glass of rum in hand and in the middle of a cloud of cigarette smoke. He wastes his time in the local cantinas with his only companions being booze, drugs and a flamboyant beatnik named Joe (Jason Schwartzman).
Night after night, he strung together the unsatisfying onenightstands, until he instantly fell in love with Eugene Allerton, a beautiful, petite student fresh out of the Navy. When Eugene sometimes throws him meaningful glances back, but then at other times appears to be non-queer again, William’s crush gives way to a tempestuous obsession. The screenplay is based on William S. Burroughs’ semi-autobiographical book of the same name.
