In 1858, six-year-old Jewish Edgardo Mortara was kidnapped in Bologna at the behest of Pius IX. Mortara was allegedly baptised secretly some years earlier by a housekeeper who believed he would die. In the then Church State (part of present-day Italy), members of another faith community were forbidden to raise Catholic children. Rescuing Mortara from the papal clutches turns out to be much more difficult than expected. Rapito is a fascinating biopic with some typically ‘bellocchian’ scenes, such as a Christ coming back to life.
