László Tóth (phenomenally portrayed by Adrien Brody) is not only a visionary architect but also a Jew, and unfortunately the latter largely determines the course of his life. After he and his wife Erzsébet survive the horrors of the Holocaust, they leave Hungary to begin a new chapter in America. There they live in poverty and endure humiliation and hunger, but everything turns around when László receives an ambitious assignment from a mysterious but stony-rich client (Guy Pearce).
