The Meltdown
Chile, 1992. Two years after the end of the dictatorship, nine-year-old Inès spends her winter holidays at her grandmother’s ski hotel. Whilst her parents are involved in the remarkable plan to ship a gigantic Antarctic iceberg to the World Expo in Seville, Inès roams around the hotel. She befriends Hanna, a fifteen-year-old German skiing prodigy. When Hanna suddenly disappears, Inès sets out to uncover the truth.
Following her critically acclaimed debut in 1976, Chilean director Manuela Martelli returns with a subtle and unsettling drama about a country that wants to look to the future but does not yet dare to face up to its past. *The Meltdown* weaves together a story of a mysterious disappearance with the collective silence that continues to hang over Chile in the wake of the dictatorship. The sense that everyone knows more than they are willing to reveal creates a particularly palpable tension.
