The President’s Cake
Life in Iraq in the 1990s was very hard. The country was under the rule of Saddam Hussein and subject to US sanctions. Despite the war and food shortages, Saddam Hussein demands that every school in the country bake a cake to celebrate his birthday. This dubious honour falls to 9-year-old Lamia at her school. Together with her neighbour and best friend Saeed and her beloved rooster Hindi, Lamia sets out on a quest to gather all the ingredients for the cake.
Director Hasan Hadi strikes a balance between humour and drama in this remarkable debut, which won the Camera d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
