A number of scientists on Antartica come into contact with an alien life form that has long been hidden under the ice. The thing turns out to be able to change its shape and blends in with the small team. This creates tension and paranoia on the roof of the world.
John Carpenter achieved success with smaller, but effective action and horror films (Halloween, Escape from New York). As a reward, he was given a bigger budget, which he allocated to Ennio Morricone. Although he usually made the score for his films himself, as a big Morricone fan he was happy to step aside. The result was the perfect horror film with incredibly realistic practical effects and a sublime soundtrack.
