Monsieur Hulot has designed a multifunctional camper van – one with more absurd technical gadgets than James Bond’s luxury cars. He wants to present his experimental creation at the world-famous motor show in Amsterdam. But between the numerous breakdowns, mechanical problems and customs checks, the journey is long and fraught with obstacles that threaten the commercial success of the venture. Will he and his camper van arrive at the motor show safe and sound, and on time?
As is typical of Tati, dialogue in the film is sparse. Tati’s final feature film – now available in a 4K-restored version – excels in its visual gags and perfectly orchestrated comic elements. In Trafic, humour arises from delays, miscommunication and the fragile illusion of efficiency in a hyper-motorised world.
