Set in and around the poor Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota, War Pony follows two young people from the Oglala Lakota community in their daily struggle to make something of their lives despite all circumstances. Debuting directors Gina Gammell and Riley Keough co-wrote the screenplay with two Native Americans from Pine Ridge, whom Keough met as an actress on the set of Andrea Arnold’s American Honey (2016).
War Pony is closely related to Chloé Zhao’s The Rider (2017) due to its authenticity and subject matter.
Awarded the Camera d’Or, the prize for best debut, at the Cannes Film Festival.

— De Standaard
“Het duo Gina Gammell en Riley Keough maakt indruk met dit naturalistische portret van een stukje Amerika.”
— De Morgen
