However, her approach clashes with the management’s commercial approach and with overworked staff who barely have time to put her ideals into practice.

When she meets Mari (Tao Okamoto), a terminally ill Japanese theatre director, an unexpected and close friendship develops between the two women. Through their conversations about illness, old age, art and mortality, Marie-Lou also begins to see her own ideas about care and dignity in a different light. What begins as an encounter between two women develops into an emotional and philosophical drama about how we deal with illness, old age and people in need of care.

Following the critically acclaimed Evil Does Not Exist, Oscar-winner Ryūsuke Hamaguchi (Drive My Car) is filming outside Japan for the first time. He weaves their personal story with incisive questions about a care system in which time, attention and humanity are increasingly pitted against efficiency and profit. Hamaguchi turns this contemplative journey into something of a form of cinematic therapy: a warm, meditative and surprisingly life-affirming film that ultimately leaves you feeling energised rather than drained. Virginie Efira and Tao Okamoto were jointly awarded the Best Actress prize at Cannes.

Avant-première on 11 November at 14:00

["post-41021","film","type-film","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry
["GET
