They hardly know him, having only seen him in an old photograph. Who is this taciturn, authoritarian man, and why has he turned up again after all these years? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A day later, he takes his sons on a journey through the desolate Russian landscape to a remote island. What could have been a simple outing gradually turns into a bitter confrontation between father and sons. The youngest, Ivan, in particular, refuses to submit to his authority without a fight.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Return<\/em> won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and has gone on to become a modern classic. A monumental debut that, more than twenty years on, has lost none of its mysterious power.<\/p>\n<p>With his stunning feature-length debut, Andrey Zvyagintsev immediately established himself as one of the great European filmmakers of his generation. A simple family drama takes on the power of a myth: mysterious, existential and visually overwhelming.
