Workshop: Soul-Searching & Intuitive Movement

This workshop by Lu / Fennel Mészáros Ortiz and VLOK is an invitation to share an approach to creation and movement based on self-reflection.

They work with various artistic techniques (charcoal, collage, painting, writing, etc.) to deepen and broaden awareness, and to give form to that which needs to be expressed through us. They wish to share these exercises with artists who want to deepen and broaden their creative work through introspection, meditation and somatic exercises.

Women* wanted for an artistic project on the perception of danger

Cities by Night is a participatory project by Valentina Medda exploring how experience fear while crossing the city.
Together with women, she sets out to find the places in Kortrijk that feel safe to them.
This is different for every woman.
The women walk through the city after dark.
They avoid streets where they do not feel comfortable.
Together, all these walks form a new map of Kortrijk.

What will you be doing?

First, you’ll take part in a workshop on Sunday 25 October from 9am until noon, led by Valentina.
After that, you’ll have two weeks to go for a walk in Kortrijk yourself, in the dark.
You’ll do this once the shops have closed and the sun has set.
You’ll be given a map on which to mark the places where you feel uncomfortable.
On 8 November, you’ll hand in your map.

Who are we looking for?

We’re looking for 12 women from different backgrounds, ethnicities, genders and ages.
Anyone who identifies as a woman is welcome.
You will receive a volunteer fee for this.

The same screen, a completely different picture

A dark night-time scene that looks genuinely dark. Colours so vivid they almost leap off the screen. An image that remains just as sharp and clear from the first minute to the last, right into the furthest corners of the screen. Thanks to new projectors – locally manufactured by Barco in Kortrijk – watching films at Budascoop is a whole new experience, and no, our ticket prices aren’t going up. Due to this transition, there will be no films screening at Budascoop from 10 to 23 August.

Deep black

With the old projectors, a little light always leaked through the lens, making dark scenes appear dark grey rather than black. The new projectors control the light on a pixel-by-pixel basis, to the point where they can switch the light off completely. The result: much greater depth in the image, as if you were standing right in the middle of it yourself.

All the colours of the rainbow

Whereas older projectors could only display a fraction of the colours your eye can perceive, the new projectors cover a much wider spectrum. The bright green in a science fiction film, the deep blue of the ocean, the red of an explosion: you’ll see them more sharply and with greater nuance than before.

Bright picture

Old cinema lamps lose their intensity over time, meaning the picture is already slightly less bright after just a few months. The new projectors use laser light and maintain that same high brightness, year after year. 3D films also benefit from this: they’re less dark and less tiring on the eyes.

Not a single detail is lost

The new projectors operate in native 4K. If you sit close to the screen, you won’t see any grain or pixels – just a razor-sharp image. Jacques Tati’s films are visual masterpieces. He shot *Playtime* on extremely expensive 70mm film stock and filled every widescreen frame with hundreds of simultaneous, tiny visual gags in the background. With the new projectors, you won’t miss a single detail.

Due to this transition, there will be no films screening at Budascoop from 10 to 23 August. From 24 August, we’ll welcome you back with a film programme that’s quintessentially Budascoop: a mix of drama, action, comedy and classics!

What do you put on your waffles?

Anyuta Wiazemsky Snauwaert is looking for your best recipe for a waffle topping!

During the Almost Summer Festival, she will be presenting her performance VerBELGingsfeest. The piece ends with a festive waffle-baking session. For this, she is looking for original, tasty, international toppings for waffles.

Do you have a recipe? Send it to lien@buda.be and be sure to come and taste them on Wednesday 10 June from 5 pm at the Town Hall!

Club Cultuur

Not every young person has the opportunity to engage with culture. That is why Kortrijk’s cultural partners – the BUDA arts centre, NEXT festival, Wilde Westen, Antigone and DURF on the one hand, and Groep Intro on the other – have joined forces. This is how Club Cultuur came into being.

Club Cultuur guides these young people towards various forms of culture, such as film, music and theatre. Through shared visits, conversations and experiences, we form a genuine ‘culture club’, turning Budascoop, Antigone’s theatre and De Kreun into familiar, welcoming places where young people can not only feel at home, but also develop a sense of ownership.

Mathilde Villeneuve leaves arts center BUDA to join the Bordeaux School of Fine Arts as Head of Studies.

After seven years as artistic director of the BUDA arts centre in Kortrijk, Mathilde Villeneuve is set to join the Bordeaux School of Fine Arts (Ebabx) as Director of Studies from mid-August.

During her time at BUDA, she contributed to the development of a rich and open artistic programme, working in close collaboration with numerous artists and partners. Her work helped shape the centre as a space attentive to contemporary forms of creation, as well as to collective practices and intersections with other fields such as education, care, and heritage.

She also played a key role in positioning the organisation within European networks that encourage collaborative practices and shared governance, further opening the programme to new voices and ways of working.

BUDA Arts Centre is taking the time until the summer to, together with its team, reshape its future, notably in preparation for the 2028–2032 policy plans that it will submit, as a ten-year core institution, to the Flemish Community by December 2026.

Mathilde Villeneuve: “I experienced BUDA Arts Centre and Belgium as exceptionally welcoming, and as home to one of the most intense and diverse artistic scenes I know. I invite everyone to discover a glimpse of that scene during the Almost Summer Festival in June – it already feels like the most beautiful farewell I could imagine. A remarkable programme is also in store for the NEXT Festival in November.”

Woon.Zorg.Kunst

Woon.Zorg.Kunst brings art into the world of care. Three residential care centres in South-West Flanders are opening their doors to three artists who will be working for six months at the rhythm of the home. Through dialogue with residents, care staff and their environment, each artist discovers their place in the organisation. These projects go beyond individual workshops or one-off presentations, seeking ways to embed art in the daily functioning of the residential care centres.

Loeke Vanhoutteghem is a word artist and musician. She is heading to Pamele, a place in the Heilig Hart Care Group that focuses on people with non-congenital brain damage.
Anneleen Keppens is a choreographer and dancer. She works from WZC De Weister in Aalbeke, which has 46 residents.
Patricia Vanneste is a musician and composer. She works with Sint-Vincentius in Avelgem, which has 108 residents.

Anneleen, Loeke and Patricia each work 20 full days in the residential care centres. They are supervised by De Ambulanten, three artists who followed a similar programme at Huize Sint Monika in Molenbeek.

In the autumn, there will be a conference to explain the programmes and take a closer look at the connection between care and culture.

This project is a collaboration between: Anneleen Keppens, De Ambulanten, Loeke Vanhoutteghem, Patricia Vanneste, WZC De Weister (City of Kortrijk), Zorggroep Heilig Hart – Pamele department, WZC Sint Vincentius (Avelgem)
With support from Durf2030, MUS-E Belgium and BUDA arts centre

Open Field

Over the last months, a.pass has been meeting with collectives and organisations concerned with the current living and working conditions of artistic research, in Belgium and abroad. Many of them have accepted our invitation to co-curate and/or co-organise a gathering in Brussels and Antwerp.

The date has been chosen: beginning of May 2026! OpenField is a gathering to collectively explore and support possible autonomies and futures of artistic research in times of neoliberal and right-wing agendas.

If you are an art collective, an artist, researcher, a practitioner, or a cultural worker interested in sharing and meeting around the questions raised by this gathering, you are very welcome to join us as audience and/or as an ally.

More news coming at the end of January.
In the meantime, save the date: 4–8 May 2026!

Dutch and Belgian artists and cultural institutions commit to a boycott of Israel

We, members of the Dutch and Belgian cultural sector, wish to no longer remain bystanders to the ongoing war crimes, crimes against humanity and what has been widely recognized by all authoritative institutions as a genocide of the Palestinian people.

With immediate effect, and in response to sustained calls from Palestinian artists and civil society at large, we declare a cultural boycott of the Israeli state and of all Israeli institutions and companies. Exempted from the boycott are those Israeli institutions and companies that are not complicit in violations of international law and have unequivocally spoken out against genocide, apartheid and the illegal occupation. The boycott is explicitly not directed at individuals or their origins, and therefore not at Jewish people or Israelis as such, but rather at the complicity of the Israeli state and Israeli institutions and companies in grave human rights violations against the Palestinian people.

For decades, artists and cultural workers around the world have been actively speaking out against Israel’s grave human rights violations. After nearly two years of genocide in Gaza, characterized by military violence, starvation and the destruction of the medical and educational infrastructure, Israel has further escalated its attacks since March 2025 with the aim of the total annihilation of life in the Gaza Strip. Every form of Palestinian culture has been systematically destroyed: churches, mosques, libraries, educational and heritage sites have been the main targets, along with the killing of journalists, humanitarian staff, medical workers, intellectuals and artists. Life is also increasingly being rendered impossible for Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem. This is but the latest phase in a longstanding policy of apartheid and military occupation that has systematically oppressed, marginalized and forcefully displaced Palestinians for decades.

The past weeks have witnessed successive initiatives of collective action against Israel’s genocidal onslaught. Five countries, including the Netherlands, have refused to join the Eurovision Song Festival, if Israel were allowed to participate. More than 5,000 international film professionals, including many in Hollywood, have publicly declared that they will not collaborate with Israeli institutions. Over 400 artists and record labels have joined the No Music for Genocide initiative, refusing permission for their music to be streamed in Israel. And the Flemish Minister of Culture personally called for a nationwide cultural boycott of Israel.

We build on the experiences of the cultural boycott of South Africa, which contributed to the collapse of the apartheid state. We stand in solidarity with our Palestinian colleagues, who are grieving for the violent loss of loved ones, homes and livelihoods. We stand side by side with our Israeli colleagues who join us in the struggle for justice and for the comprehensive rights of the Palestinian people, as stipulated in international law.

A cultural boycott alone cannot end the genocide, apartheid or illegal occupation. We thus echo longstanding Palestinian calls on the sports sector, academia, the economic sectors and all spheres of politics to sever ties with complicit institutions. Only a groundswell of collective grassroots and civil society action can force Israel to fully comply with its obligations under international law.

This decision to commit to a boycott has not been taken lightly. The cultural sector is guided by the belief that artistic exchange and collaboration ought to make the world a better place, or at the very least, do no harm. There can, however, be no question of continuing business as usual: this impunity must come to an end.
