UNISSON

Unisono literally means ‘one sound’ and generally refers to the unilateral or simultaneous occurrence of multiple elements. In music, it means that two or more singing voices or instruments play or sing the same tone or melody, possibly in different octaves. In the world of dance, it refers to dancers performing the same movements simultaneously. In everyday life, the word is used to indicate that everyone agrees with the same opinion, i.e. agreeing ‘in unison’. It evokes associations with power, community and beauty, but can also serve as an instrument of governance, propaganda and subjugation.

The piece originated from research into unison in various domains – music, singing, movement, dress codes, collective rituals – and explores its applications to reveal both the beauty and the absurdity of this human organisation.

Yair Barelli and his team are gearing up for the premiere at the Théâtre de la Ville on 24 and 25 September.
