Rapid eye movement (working title)
In BUDA, Line Boogaerts and Ditmar Goes explore the interaction between image, sound and movement through live drawings on glass. They explore the impact of noise on our daily functioning. They interpret noise broadly: from visual disturbances, such as spots or obstructions in drawings on glass, to auditory disturbances. The core of this research lies in the artistic play with distraction and obstruction, and how this changes our perception. They translate blind spots and noise into a multidisciplinary artistic language that integrates image, sound and touch.
Rapid eye movement is a state of heightened sensory activity, comparable to the phase in which dreams arise. In BUDA, they focus on the impact of noise on sleep. On the one hand, noise that calms and soothes us and, on the other hand, noise that disturbs our sleep. Sleep is a state of semi-consciousness in which our senses are still active and we simultaneously dwell in our own inner world. Both worlds have an impact on each other. During sleep, sounds and images intrude, distort, merge and sometimes slip away again. Through visual and auditory exploration, Boogaerts and Goes search for a shared, hybrid language — a language that is not fixed in one sense, but arises in the overlap between them. Their collaboration focuses on the boundaries of perception, on the fragile transition between reality and imagination, and on the blind spots that become visible when control gives way to a dreamlike alertness. Specifically, they work in their residency at BUDA with contact microphones that they attach to the glass.
This residency is part of a development programme supported by the Flemish Government, Jan Desmedt of 4 zinnen en meer, BUDA, C-TAKT, Kunsthal Mechelen, Iris Vantieghem, Werktank, Ditmar Goes, Els Vermeersch and Luc Vandierendonck from Wit.h, Maarten Buyl and Raphael Malfliet (Extant), Christoph De Boeck.
Line Boogaerts (BE) & Ditmar Goes (BE)
Line Boogaerts studied graphic design and multimedia design at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (KASK) in Ghent, where she graduated in 2010 with a master’s degree in multimedia design. At the end of 2012, she was awarded a prize by the Higher Institute of Fine Arts (HISK) in Ghent. In her artistic practice, she creates temporary drawings on windows using materials such as tinted oil, soap and brushes. By playing with blind and transparent spots, she transforms the view of the landscape or interior behind them: some details disappear, others are highlighted, creating new perspectives and insights.
Boogaerts’ artistic research takes various forms, ranging from in-situ work, performance, film, animated video and video installation. Her work has been presented at BUDA Kortrijk, M HKA Antwerp, Vooruit Ghent, KVS Brussels, Art Exchange, University of Essex – Colchester (UK), Fondazione 107, Turin, De Warande (Turnhout), Musea Brugge, Centre d’Art Waza, Lubumbashi (DR Congo), and elsewhere.
Ditmar Goes is an audiographer, musician and voice actor. His work ranges from musical compositions to voice recordings, always with a keen ear and a unique eye for detail. Music is in his blood: give him a keyboard and he will effortlessly create your next film score. As a voice actor, he combines experience with a special je ne sais quoi that makes an impression. For Ditmar, ‘Speech is silver, silence is golden’. Listening is his strength, and he does it better than anyone else.
