CHRONIC
Contemporary masculinity training programmes, survival retreats and ‘wildman’ brotherhoods promise renewal through discipline, hierarchy and toughness. They draw on the chivalric ideal: men as warriors who must prove themselves and control their emotions.
In CHRONIC, a character enters a commune inspired by Arthur’s Round Table. Jousting, sword fighting and wearing armour initially appear to be part of that same ritual of hardening. But what if these rituals could mean something completely different? Instead of being toughened up, the initiation is dismantled and reassembled, according to laws that lie outside the ordinary world.
What begins as a chivalric quest thus becomes an exploration of bodily care and control. How close are the two?
