CUBO

Latifa Laâbissi and Walid Ben Salim have worked together for the first time but this is not their first meeting. They recognize each other in a shared memory that precedes them : the song, dance and stories of the Amazigh culture, which is passed on body to body and voice to voice.

Starting from that tradition they give life to figures that have been pushed into the margin for a long time : Majdoub, attracted by the invisible, Lbouhaliya, the holy madman and Lmeskoun, the possessed one. These figures populate the stage and make visible what is often excluded or forgotten.

The installation of Nadia Lauro consisting of threads and various materials represents a world between dream, ritual and hallucination.

Flaming Creatures is a performance about memory, transference and resistance against erasure. The stage becomes a place where what has been driven into the margin becomes visible again.

Latifa Laâbissi is a dancer and choreographer. Mixing genres, reflecting upon and redefining formats, Latifa Laâbissi’s work seeks to bring onstage multiple offstage perspectives in which stories, figures and voices are placed and highlighted. Her use of the voice and of the face as a vehicle for minority status and accents became inseparable from her dance movement in Self portrait camouflage (2006) and Loredreamsong (2010). Continuing her reflection on archives, she created Écran somnambule and La part du rite (2012) based on 1920s German dance. Her latest creation, Pourvu qu’on ait l’ivresse (2016), co-created with the stage designer Nadia Lauro, produces visions, landscapes and images in which excess, monstrosity, beauty, uncertainty, the comical and terror coexist.

Since 2011, Latifa Laâbissi has been artistic director of Extension Sauvage, an artistic and educational programme in rural France (Brittany). In 2016, a monograph of her complete works was published by Les Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers and Les presses du réel. Until 2019, Latifa Laâbissi is associate artist at CCN2, the National Choreographic Centre in Grenoble, and at the Le Triangle arts centre in Rennes.

Walid Ben Selim is a humanist singer, poet and composer with a deep love of Arabic poetry. He was born in Casablanca and lives in the south of France. He writes, composes, sings, raps and plays musical instruments such as the guimbri, the Arabic lute and the piano, and enjoys collaborating with artists from diverse cultures, genres and disciplines.

In all his work, Walid Ben Selim demonstrates a strong social commitment and artistic curiosity. With his roots firmly planted in the culture and literary heritage of North Africa and the Middle East, he is always on the lookout for new musical adventures.
