A group of French teenagers travel to Naples for a school trip to Pompeii, where the victims of the eruption of Vesuvius have been trapped in stone for centuries. Under the scorching Italian summer sun, the young people’s repressed desires, frustrations and unrequited loves also come to the surface with increasing intensity. One by one, they surrender to feelings they no longer seem able to control, until there is no turning back.
Cinematographer Marine Atlan (Le Ravissement, Jessica Forever) makes her feature-length debut with La Gradiva, and this is evident in every frame. Her camera stays close to the characters, capturing skin, light, shadow and the sweltering heat of Naples in sensual images. She contrasts the petrified bodies of Pompeii with a young generation that is, in contrast, brimming with desire and a zest for life. A tender and sultry film with a touch of Call Me by Your Name, which won the Grand Prix at the Semaine de la Critique in Cannes.
