HIKER stems from a fascination with mountain hiking, transcendence and ‘gear’: clothing, tools, bags, shelter, food and protective equipment that people use to survive in inhospitable environments. The premise of the performance is that the hiker (Gerben Vaillant) appears ‘all geared up’ and that the entire world of the performance (light, sound, set) unfolds from this wrapped-up figure.
Something that is halfway between a picnic and a pilgrimage. Clumsiness and ecstasy alternate. The hiker’s walking patterns evoke spaces, and this walking also seems to generate states and thoughts. HIKER wants to touch on what people seek in the mountains and what they flee from there.

The residency at BUDA is the first working period! They read and write texts, collect their own gear to try out a few things and do walking improvisations.

Bosse Provoost (BE) & Ezra Veldhuis (NL)

Bosse Provoost is theatermaker en regisseur. In zijn werk gaat hij radicaal voor een theater van ‘zintuiglijke onderprikkeling’. Hij creëert composities van licht- en sfeerverschuivingen, maakt ritme met stiltes en laat half-menselijk aandoende figuren aantreden op scène.

Ezra Veldhuis is beeldend kunstenaar. Ze onderhoudt een hybride praktijk, waarin licht als materiaal en onderwerp centraal staat: ze maakt installaties met monumentale schilderijen, schildert films op pellicule en werkt, voornamelijk als scenograaf en lichtontwerper, aan performances en theatervoorstellingen.

Het werk dat Provoost en Veldhuis sinds Matisklo (2018) samen maken, is hoe langer hoe meer op een beeldende logica geënt, waarbij theatertechniek niet als een versterkend element wordt gebruikt, maar als een vrij te bespelen en te bedenken instrumentarium. In 2020 gingen ze in première met de installatie-performance SUN-SET.
