Cuqui Jerez (ES)

Sugar Island

Sugar Island takes as its starting point the research they have developed in recent years on the suspension of sense, which has resulted in a trilogy of performative pieces: Las Ultracosas, Mágica y Elástica, and Supernova. The conceptual framework of this research relates abstract choreographic operations and contemplative experiences, tensioned with an eclectic combination of references that encompass: the mundane, artifice, classicism, and the strange. The relationships that arise between these operations and references seek to blur the boundaries between the presentational and the representational, in an attempt to dissolve this dichotomy and locate a space “in between,” to open cracks in the surface of reality. This combination produces an experience that is difficult to name, dismantling the hierarchical reasoning of the conscious mind, creating a kind of hallucination, emptiness, and absurdity, and an aesthetic of estrangement that is both irreverent and playful. Sugar Island traces a new line of work that connects the research we have carried out so far with the technique of ballet and its codification.

During this technical residency in BUDA, all aspects of the work will come together for the first time: choreography and performance, musical composition, set design, and lighting. The purpose of this residency is primarily to work on the technical aspects, as well as to finish the musical score, deepen the choreographic research, and develop the dramaturgy of all the elements.
