Inspired by personal experiences, Kinga Jaczewska became captivated by the literal and figurative meaning of the colour grey within the Western context.
She developed a growing interest in the value of grey within capitalist culture, the various poetics associated with it and the relationship and dependence of expression and colour that she explored in her earlier works such as Grey, Time It Takes or Gabriel. For BRUT, Jaczewska starts from a more personal and literal starting point than before – Brutalism. Brutalism as an architectural genre as prevalent in Eastern and Central Europe, but also as a social system and ideology it once represented, contrasting with the questionable brilliance of contemporary capitalism.
With a focus on functionality, conscious simplicity and a radical approach to form and minimalist constructions that Jaczewska borrows from Brutalist ideology, BRUT explores the relationships between the individual and the collective, between expressionism and béton brut, and between freedom and restriction. By placing the ‘ordinary’ at the centre, Jaczewska dares to question her own understanding of the spectacular.
