During this living-room style panel discussion, moderated by community builder extraordinaire, Li Li Chong, we will discuss some interesting facets of creating connection and social cohesion, including welcoming and community building. We will also highlight several inspirational movements being driven by local individuals and organizations. Speakers who have already confirmed their attendance: Blut! Art Gallery, Wij(k) de Parken, Clara Declercq (Antigone), Youssef El Haddaji (Red Side Academy) and Kristin Keller (OpenDeur vzw). After the panel discussion, there will be an open Café Connect moment for the public to ask questions and share personal experience.

The World Health Organization has issued a stark warning about the growing harm of social isolation to our wellbeing, stating that “Humans are hardwired for connection.” Alarmingly, a large-scale survey conducted in 2024 by KU Leuven, Thomas More and VUB, reported that around one-third of adults living in Flanders felt lonely or disconnected. However, people who had a positive attitude toward their neighborhood felt less lonely. Therefore, experts have been urgently calling for the transformation of neighborhoods into places that foster a sense of connection and social cohesion. But what should, could and does this transformation look like in an increasingly diverse city like Kortrijk?

This event is being organized in collaboration with OpenDeur vzw, a small organization that provides a platform for interaction, exchange and connection between local and international residents with the aim of uniting the many colors and cultures of our city in one community of Kortrijkzanen. Café Connect Kortrijk was their Warmste Week 2024 project, connecting new(er) residents with local activities and organizations in a low key, warm and welcoming way.

About the moderator: Li Li Chong is a dedicated bridge builder who connects people, communities, and cultures in both her professional and personal life. As a Participation & Outreach Officer at Concertgebouw, she creates opportunities for inclusion, engagement, and meaningful participation, with a strong focus on young people and underrepresented communities. Beyond her professional role, she actively supports cultural and social initiatives that foster dialogue, representation, and mutual understanding. Drawing on her Malaysian background and extensive network, she brings diverse perspectives together and encourages collaboration across sectors and communities. Guided by collaboration and curiosity, Li Li builds sustainable connections between policy and practice, culture and society, helping diverse communities learn from and strengthen one another.
