Spoken language always goes hand in hand with gestures: we emphasise or soften words, expand their meaning or wipe that meaning away. That silent contract between language and movement forms the core of Terms & Conditions, a lecture performance by Ingrid Berger Myhre. How does the body function as a conduit for language? When should it act, adapt or contradict language? And how do we deal with words that evoke multiple interpretations?
In her artistic work in recent years, Ingrid has often focused on the relationships between dance and language. She traces shifts in meaning and usage, and maps relationships between words. From this perspective, she also explores how language moves choreographically. She does this through play structures and assignments. Her broader research into literacy in dance resulted in the productions In Other Words (2021) and Spelling Spectacle (2023).
In Terms & Conditions, Ingrid will further elaborate on several research themes. She will discuss, among other things: kinship and nuance; ambiguity and speculation; ideas of origin and authenticity; productive misunderstandings; naming and function; and inner language.
Memento Festival will be held in Kortrijk between 12 and 29 March 2026. Myriem El-Kaddouri, as Letterzetter (city poet), is the festival’s curator and has chosen ‘absurdity’ as its theme. This performance is part of the festival. There are other performances in the building. You can find the full line-up at www.mementofestival.be.
