Mihai and Lisbet Gheorghiu (Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve) move with their five children to a remote fjord in Norway. The deeply religious and conservative family tries to build a new life there and soon becomes part of the local community. But when their teenage daughter Elia turns up at school with bruises, questions arise about their strict Christian upbringing. The school raises the alarm and the village, which had previously welcomed them so warmly, becomes increasingly divided.

In Fjord, Romanian director Cristian Mungiu (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, Beyond the Hills) turns his sharp eye to moral conflicts and social tensions set against the icy Norwegian landscape. Inspired by true events, he explores how differing views on faith, upbringing and child protection can clash head-on. What begins as a family drama develops into an oppressive portrait of a community in which mistrust, cultural differences and beliefs drive people further and further apart.

Where does the line lie between parental freedom and society’s responsibility to protect children? And who ultimately decides what constitutes a good upbringing? Mungiu refuses to offer easy answers. With Fjord, Cristian Mungiu won his second Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, nineteen years after his victory for 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days.

Starring Renate Reinsve (The Worst Person in the World, Sentimental Value) and Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice, A Different Man), this chilling drama unfolds in which no one is entirely blameless and every decision can have far-reaching consequences.
