1957. Guy Foucher, a 20-year-old French car mechanic, has fallen in love with 17-year-old Geneviève Emery, who works in her mother’s chic but financially struggling umbrella shop. On the evening before Guy leaves for a two-year combat mission in Algeria, he and Geneviève made love. She becomes pregnant and must choose between waiting for Guy’s return or accepting a marriage proposal from a wealthy diamond merchant.

With Les Parapluies de Cherbourg, Jacques Demy made film history. Every line of dialogue is sung to music by Michel Legrand, making the musical both a moving and realistic love story.
