From Israeli filmmakers Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor – two of the four directors behind the Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land – comes NAZA: a searing investigation into the war in Gaza and the systems behind the mass killing of Palestinian civilians.
Filmed during the night on the rooftops of Tel Aviv, Abraham and Szor examine the decision-making processes and mechanisms behind the Israeli bombings of Gaza. The title refers to a military acronym used by the Israeli intelligence services to denote the expected number of civilian casualties from an air strike. From their perspective as Israelis, the filmmakers pose a fundamental and uncomfortable question: how can a society permit the dehumanisation of another group of people, and what mechanisms make this possible?
The documentary builds on journalistic investigations carried out by The Guardian, +972 Magazine and Local Call between 2023 and 2025. Following on from No Other Land, Abraham and Szor now turn their attention specifically to their own Israeli society. NAZA is a challenging film about war and dehumanisation, but above all about responsibility and the need to break the silence.
Produced by The Guardian and JW Films, with The Zone of Interest director Jonathan Glazer as executive producer. NAZA had its world premiere in the main competition at the Venice Film Festival, where it won the Special Jury Prize.
