Barbara (Valerie Pachner) and her partner Heli (Robert Stadlober) lead a happy life in the Austrian countryside with their two children. As professional clowns, they don’t take life too seriously and manage to find humour even in the face of adversity. When Barbara loses her entire family in a road accident, her world comes crashing down.
Her identity as a clown – someone whose job it is to make others laugh – is also suddenly called into question. Yet Barbara refuses to let her grief define her entirely and, step by step, seeks ways to carry on living with her loss.
Adrian Goiginger (Die beste aller Welten) bases his film on the true story and the book of the same name by Barbara Pachl-Eberhart. Starring Valerie Pachner (A Hidden Life), Vier minus Drei is not only a story of grief, but above all one of resilience and the remarkable way in which sadness and humour can coexist. A moving film about finding meaning again when life has changed irrevocably.
