Melissa Mabesoone is currently working on an audiovisual work that slips through themes of blue economy, aquaculture, reproduction and sensuality, mothering, consumerism, animal suffering and the fish and food industry, performance and dramedy. It builds on a study of the eyestalk ablation technique (a technique used by some shrimp farmers to turn female shrimp into instinctless reproductive machines) and more ethical solutions. After Melissa infiltrated a European blue economy conference with Anaïs Chabeur as researchers from a fictional company, she is now preparing a scene at BUDA in which she and her colleagues are coached for an important pitch as shrimp farmers.

Melissa Mabesoone is a multidisciplinary artist, actor and director. Her work has been shown at OT301, Sale Docks, M HKA, and published in nY magazine. She performed for Dora Garcia, Assaf Gruber, Lies Pauwels & NTGent and Peter Aers and starred in the television series Onder Vuur and Juliet.
For 10 years, she has been working with Oshin Albrecht under the banner ‘buren’. buren is house artist at Kaaitheater and part of the APAP feminist futures network.
