Lydia McGlinchey – Feral – 18:00 – Budascoop

Feral is a series of four staged landscapes which assume contrastingly different imaginaries of body and space. This work invites the spectators to observe the transformations of each landscape, affirming the potential of re-reading and re-conceiving. The performers become unified voices, larger-than-life figures, inanimate entities, and generic surfaces.

In Western art history, landscape representation has historically focused on staging the relation between humans and nature or the natural versus the man made. In this work, we understand ‘landscape’ as a media which proposes conceptions about identity, humanness, and nature by means of staging them as imaginary places. Landscape media, therefore, influences the way individuals and groups relate to their environment. We use landscape as a site of dispute where alternative readings of space and bodies emerge.

While we are here explores the timeless desire to dance collectively hard. This five-dancer group performance brings together underground technoraves with folkloric group dances that emphasise fun and togetherness.

A boundless, hybrid technofolk, a rowdy folk that celebrates mutual differences. A soft folk, a folk that chooses to dance intimately together. A stray folk not situated in time or space. With no nostalgia for the past and no specific future in mind, here we are, dancing in spirals and circles, facing each other and another place on the horizon.

Lydia McGlinchey (°1998) was born in Sydney, Australia, of Peruvian-Irish descent. She is currently working as a performer and maker, living in Brussels. Lydia is trained in dance/performance, yet she also works with textile/fiber art. Lydia’s work FERAL was presented at Theatre VIERNULVIER, Kaaitheatre, and arts centre BUDA. Lydia has worked with Alix Eynaudi on her project Noa+Snow. Additionally, she also worked with Simon Van Schuylenbergh, Nathan Ooms, Stefa Govaart, Mischa Goldberg and Rosie Sommers.

Lisa Vereertbrugghen is a Brussels-based choreographer, teacher, dramaturg and researcher. Since 2014, she has been researching hardcore techno dance styles in various formats: performances, lecture-performances, performance installations and publications. She previously worked at arts centre BUDA on The performance formerly known as performance, The Extraordinary Way She Moves and Softcore, a hardcore encounter. While we are here is her first group choreo.

“During the play’s runtime she manages to build up tension in the hall, starting from spastic movements and music and bringing it to a climax where the dancers form a circle in the middle and finish the performance by singing a folk song. ” — Etcetera
