THERE’S MORE IN A BREAK THAN YOU THINK

Rhythm, voice and movement are always central to Alma Söderberg’s work. But where in her first collaboration with Cullberg, The Listeners (2020), she intertwined voice and movement, here she explores the break moment: the cut, the break, the moment when what flows is broken up or reversed.

Double bill with the performance The Listeners at 19:30.
Free shortfilm la mano que canta of Alma Söderberg & Alex Reynolds at 19:00.

Music is an essential component of all the projects of Alma Söderberg, who lives and works in Brussels as a choreographer, performer and musician. She uses her voice and body to play the space as if it were an instrument. Her current research focuses on the way we listen while we look, on the relationship between the ear and the eye. She has embedded her practice in a number of solo performances before creating group shows in collaboration with various well-known artists, collectives and institutions, such as the Swedish ensemble Cullberg, with whom she created The Listeners and Noche, presented during NEXT 2022. With a background in contemporary dance and flamenco, she always works closely with sound artist Hendrik Willekens. Alma Söderberg also curates for festivals such as the EarEye festival in Malmö, and has won the Thalia prize and been awarded the Cullberg grant.
