Techno, which is danced individually and hard, seems miles away from the softer and more collective folk. It is precisely in this that Lisa Vereertbrugghen saw the challenge of bringing the two genres together, to arrive at a kind of hybrid techno folk performed with abandon by five dancers.
While we are here explores the timeless desire to dance collectively hard. This five-dancer group performance brings together underground techno raves with folk group dances that emphasise fun and togetherness. The result? A boundless, hybrid techno folk. A rowdy folk that celebrates mutual differences. A soft folk that chooses to dance intimately together. A stray folk that is not situated in time or space.
With no nostalgia for the past and no specific future in mind, here we are, dancing in spirals and circles, facing each other and another place on the horizon.
While we are here is the first group piece by Lisa Vereertbrugghen, who has been investigating hardcore techno sound and dance styles through various formats between performance, sound and installation since 2014.
