CUBO

In 2015, an X-ray scan revealed that a racist inscription was hidden under the paint layers of Kasimir Malevich’s famous ‘Black Square’ (1915). Even the supreme abstraction does not appear to be free of politics. It is precisely this tension that puts three black performers on edge in ‘DEMONstratio’.

Within the clean lines of a perfectly lit square, they seek an incantatory counterpoint in the subconscious power of voice and movement. Light and dark, reason and feeling, certainty and uncertainty: sharp contrasts are there to be transcended.

Brussels-based Milø Slayers (°1993) is a dancer and choreographer, active since 2014 with additional interests in photography, poetry, music, stop-motion and the organisation of cultural events. In 2021, STUK Leuven premiered his professional dance debut, ‘Monstrare and/or Monere’.

Milø’s trajectory as a dancer-choreographer combines two spheres of influence: a (self-taught) track within hip-hop and ‘urban arts’. In 2014, for instance, he co-founded the three-member Brussels dance company Slayers, good for hip-hop battles and dance creations such as ‘Cyborg’s Quest’ (2015) and ‘Wormhole’ (2017). And a trace contemporary dance within the subsidised arts, since his training at the Institut Supérieur des Arts et des Choréographies (ISAC) within the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts.

Besides his own work, he also dances in works by other choreographers, such as ‘Coloured Swan 3: Harriets Remix’ by Moya Michael (Selection Theatre Festival 2021).
